Artist in residence

At the beginning of March 2023 our first ever artist in residence arrived on the farm.

Cecilia Ramon is a maker of art, art educator, and dharma practitioner.

Cecilia was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and now lives at the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, USA. She is currently taking some inspiration from the views at Upper Ballaird.

Cecilia is inspired by the complexity and beauty of the natural world, observing water, living systems, and plant growth.

I have been making wood carvings, drawings, watercolor paintings, weaving plants, and making books for many years. The multiple crises of our times, from ecological to social inequities, motivate me to create and co-create with others to envision new ways of being on our planet.

Cecilia has been kind enough to share her art with us and give us an insight into her creative process. She has been collecting soil and flower samples from the farm to incorporate in her work.

I have made many experiments with soil pigments from different fields in the farm, using black ink, paint, and charcoal from Green Aspirations. I shared drawings, paintings and studies in a warm gathering of friends. It was such a wonderful experience, finding new ways to integrate art back into our lives. A seamless way to live, growing vegetables, growing families, making friends and making art.”

Cecilia has found much inspiration from the farm.

My stay at the Upper Ballaird Farm, has been filled with unspeakable subtleties of light patterns, constant variations of the weather systems traversing this landscape, all this beauty, an hourly inspiration. It has been so enlivening to feel the palpable positive energy of collaboration to grow food sustainably that Philipp and Louise have, a commitment to this land and this community.”

We have found much inspiration from Cecilia and her beautiful creativity.
